Civil War Soldier Honored
The community is commemorating a local veteran.
The public along with family members gathered at Woodlawn Cemetary Saturday morning for a patriotic memorial service held in honor of Civil War soldier William Carver Burns. Descendants of Burns spent months researching and planning for the event.
"We found many great things that he’s done in Zanesville, he was a prominent citizen, and he was in attendance when Lee surrendered to Appomattox to General Grant," said Great-Great-Grandson Bill Lusher.
Private Burns served in the 13th Ohio Calvary, Company F, under the command of General Phillip Sheridan.
Members of the Sons of Union Veterans and Ladies Auxiliaries were also in attendance. The service included several speakers, Color Guard, period music, and a musket salute.
"We’ve heard about William C. Burns all of our whole life, and although most of our people were on the confederate side, he’s our loan union ancestor," said Great-Great-Granddaughter Pamela Steele.
Mayor Butch Zwelling proclaimed September 25th to be a day recognizing William C. Burns for his contributions during the Civil War.
