Tornado Siren Tests In Muskingum County

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – It’s the time of the year to plan ahead and stay weather aware for a safe Spring.

This week is Ohio’s Severe Weather Awareness week. During this week, public safety agencies, schools, cities, and businesses join together to spread awareness that Spring brings increased lightening, floods, and tornadoes. Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency tested the tornado sirens in the area just to make sure everything was working correctly and sirens could be heard.

“To make sure that they’re working. To make sure people are aware of where they can hear them, where they can’t. As I’ve said before, it’s an outdoor warning system. It’s not designed for everybody to hear indoors,” said Emergency Management Agency Director, Jeff Jadwin.

Jadwin said 44 of the operating sirens worked correctly. The sirens are located in the most populated areas of the County. He also said if a tornado warning is issued, seek safe shelter immediately.

“In a real event of the sirens going off, people need to go to the lowest level of their home, if they have a basement. Get away from windows because flying glass could be very dangerous to you,” said Jadwin.

“You got to take precautions that will keep you safe,” he added.

Muskingum County EMA offers their Citizen Alert System, by signing up on their website you can receive emergency alerts such as tornado warnings to your phone or email address.
