Extreme Heat, Be Careful

The extreme heat can be deadly…And that’s why local health experts are reminding residents to take precautions when heading outdoors.

Director of Nursing at the Zanesville Health Department, Carol Howdyshell said, the most important thing is that the body temperature doesn’t overheat. She said, a fan may help you feel more comfortable, but it doesn’t actually cool the body. Instead, place a cool cloth around your neck. And when it comes to kids, make sure they are drinking.

"But, playing outside, that is just being part of a kid," said Howdyshell. "For a parent, I would really just recommend those kids are drinking and they don’t dehydrate."

Howdyshell said, it’s important to not only drink water when you feel thirsty, but to stay hydrated throughout the day. She suggests a glass of water each hour. She said, don’t only check in with the kids, but the grandparents too.

"So during the heat it’s always a good time to have a place and just check up on them," said Howdyshell.

The elderly can often become dizzy. It’s important to know if they are on any fluid restrictions. If so, they will need to speak with their doctor about other ways to stay hydrated.
