Free Instruments for Kids
A retired band director is helping kids fulfill their dreams of playing in the band.
The Muskingum County instrument collection drive is giving students the opportunity to play an instrument without the expensive price tag. Coordinator Jeff Roquemore said it all started at a yard sale.
"I had an experience last fall when I picked up a trumpet and gave it to a student that we know in Zanesville," said Roquemore. "The girl started in the band, and she’s loving it. That’s what we expect from the kids."
Donated instruments will be repaired and distributed to local band directors. Roquemore said music can enhance the development of children.
"There are lots of statistics about how music students have better scores in math and science," said Roquemore. "They have better college entrance exam scores, and there’s just so many things socially that the students gain as well."
Roquemore will be collecting instruments on August 13th from 9 AM to 1 PM, or you can drop off instruments at the Grace United Methodist Church on Shinnick Street. You can call (740) 683-3309 to arrange an appointment.
