Robert Anthony “Tony” Hartlage, Sr.
June 22, 1942 — May 8, 2011
Mr. Hartlage was a resident of Washington, Pennsylvania. He graduated Rosecrans High School in Zanesville, Ohio in 1960. After attending University of Dayton, he enlisted in the United States Airforce, resigning as a Conscientious Objector when the US announced plans to enter into the Vietnam War. Tony was an active member of the democratic party throughout his life and was highly involved in the George McGovern, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama Presidential campaigns. He participated in clean-up and reconstruction efforts following a devastating tornado in Xenia, Ohio in 1974. He was also instrumental in the organization and management of the Greene County Coal Owners Association in Greene County, Pennsylvania. In addition to his political interests, Tony was an enthusiastic sportsman who enjoyed tennis, football, basketball, skiing and running. He completed the Marine Corps Marathon in 1981 and helped coach Immaculate Conception High School in Washington, PA to it’s first winning football season in 1988. He also coached a Special Olympics Ski Team, managed operations at the Washington Park Pool and was proprietor of Pancake Roller Skating Rink in Washington, PA. Shortly before his passing, he was a manager and tennis instructor at Peters Township Tennis Center in McMurray, Pennsylvania. Tony was a man of many skills, trades and interests. He was an avid euchre player, storyteller, reader and even an occasional songwriter. During his lifetime, Tony worked at various times as a stonemason, heavy equipment operator, coal miner, and general contractor. He was also an innovative builder who co-designed and constructed an earth-sheltered home in Washington, Pennsylvania.
Tony was the son of Robert and Roberta Hartlage of Zanesville, Ohio. He is survived by his four children: Christy Hartlage, Robert Anthony Hartlage, Jr., Nina Marie Restivo, and Benjamin Hartlage; his six grandchildren: Louis Hartlage-Wright, Arlo Hartlage-Wright, Delilah Hartlage, Dulcie Hartlage, Miles Gemperle Hartlage, and Veronica Gemperle Hartlage; and his siblings: Linda Adornetto, James Hartlage, Jean Vaughn, Cynthia Kendrick and Ann Hilson.
Visitation will be held Monday May 9th from 2-4 & 6-8pm at the Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave. With Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated Tuesday May 10 at 1:00pm at St. Thomas Catholic Church.
