Household Hazardous Waste Collection

It’s time to clean out your garages and attics.
The city of Zanesville is having a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day Saturday August 7th for all of Muskingum County at Ohio University Zanesville. It’s a good time to get rid of anything that could harm the environment in a landfill.
"We do this to take dangerous things out of the waste stream. You don’t want to put old gasoline in your trash. That can pose a threat to the collectors. It could start a fire within the truck even if it reaches the landfill it poses a threat underground. The same thing with putting it down the drain. If you pour motor oil down the drain it’s going to wind up in our sewage treatment plant," Matthew Phillips Director of Parks, City of Zanesville said.
The items that are collected are taken to Environmental Enterprises Incorporated where they’ll be recycled or disposed.
"Take a look at those things that aren’t easily disposed of in your regular trash. We’re collecting things like used motor oils, paints, thinners, and pool chemicals. The fire department will be on hand that day they will collect old ammunition, gun powder, flares, old fire works, things of that nature," Phillips said.
Phillips said if things like gas, oil and medication seep into the water by being thrown away it’s harder to get cleaned up.
