The Cold Didn't Slow Runners At The 7th Annual Race For Grace

While most people like to sleep in on their holiday day off, runners from around the area hopped out of bed bright and early for the 7th Annual Race for Grace on Thursday.

"Fortunately, we’ve been able to stay inside the church keep us warm, but it’s getting a little chilly," said runner Crae Merryman.

And, young runner Isach Leavy said that it was, "Very, very, very cold and chilly."

191 runners from across the area participated in the run, which was sponsored by Grace United Methodist Church. Race director, Becky Woods said that each year the run benefits one of Zanesvilles local charities.

"It’s a 5K run, a 1 mile walk, and all the proceeds go to Eastside Ministries."

Betsy Thomas from Eastside Community Ministries could barely put into words how important events like the Race for Grace are for Eastside.

"The need at our pantry just grows and grows. It’s amazing you know, the need. This donation is just really helpful to us. Especially this time of year."

And even though Thursday was Thanksgiving Day, Merryman thought the run was a great workout. Especially since the average person consumes nearly 4,500 calories at Thanksgiving dinner.

"Good, this will knock about 800 off!"

Thursdays race was a great way to gear up for the big meal, and give back to the community at the same time. 100% of the registration fees are donated to the food pantry. Woods said that this year the race raised close to $2,500.

The race started at 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning, and each runner even got to run away with some swag, a pair of gloves.
