AAA Finds Active Driving Assistance Systems Interfere More Than Assist

ZANESVILLE, OH – Active driving assistance systems are the building blocks to autonomous vehicles, this includes features such as lane assist and adaptive cruise control.

While these systems are meant to help the driver, they are not a replacement for paying attention to the roadway.

“So right now there is no substitute for an engaged driver. Even if you are using a system that has that adaptive cruise control, that lane keeping assist, you think the car can drive itself. You really still need to pay attention, there is no substitute for an engaged driver and our research shows that there are issues with these systems,” AAA Senior Manager of Public Affairs Kimberly Schwind said.

Research done by Triple A has shown that active driving assistance systems are not 100% safe or reliable.

“Automotive researchers found that active driving assistance systems had some sort of an issue about every 8 miles out of the 4000 that they tested and some of the biggest issues were with the vehicle staying in the lane. They also found that these systems often disengaged without warning, which is definitely startling and can be dangerous if drivers decide to disengage from the task of driving and rely on these systems to drive the car for them.”

Consumers should be
educated on what vehicle systems their car has and know the
limitations on what it can and cannot do.
