American Legion Hands Out Scholarships

ZANESVILLE, Ohio-Post 29 of the American Legion in Zanesville handed out its annual scholarships to deserving college students on Tuesday night.
The event was attended by around twenty post members, students and parents at the American Legion bar and conference downtown. Post commander Larry Wheeler has more.
“We’re getting ready to hand out eight scholarships to individuals in the community whose families have ties to the legion. It’s an a thousand dollar scholarship, they’ll receive five hundred tonight and five hundred at the end of year… Basically we just look for grades and also sometimes, at least I do anyways, what they’re majoring in.”
They also look for students who have the potential to help their community. Wheeler says the scholarships are one of his favorite long standing traditions.
“I’ve been doing it for five. I don’t know how long or when it really started but this is my fifth year I believe. It’s one of the more rewarding things that I get to do anyways. It’s really fun to see the families come together and be able to help the youth.”
If you have a family member in the Legion you may be eligible for next year’s scholarship.
