“Today, Muskingum County lost a celebrated hero. John Glenn, a New Concord native, left this earth for the third and last time as a happy and fulfilled person.

John Glenn embodied the pioneering spirit of every Ohioan and every American. The first American man to orbit the earth, the boy from New Concord exemplified bravery.

John Glenn was a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He adored his wife of 73 years, Annie, and his children, David and Lyn.

Senator Glenn was also a public servant. He served the nation as a combat pilot, extended the United States’ reach into space as the first American to orbit the earth, and was the oldest human to travel in space at the age of 77 in 1998. He proudly represented the citizens of Ohio through elected office as a US Senator for four terms until his retirement in 1999.

He lived a life shaped by the values of Muskingum County: devotion to his loved ones and dedication to his country. We will dearly miss John Glenn and join Annie and the rest of the Glenn family in mourning the loss of one of our own.”
