ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The cold is here and with the dangerously low temperatures comes possible car issues.

AAA partnered up with Clever Towing and Auto Repair to help locals stay safe. When temperatures get into the lower digits, Mechanic Billy Pickrell said cars can start to experience a variety of issues.

“Wintertime is pretty hard. Vehicles don’t tend to last very long when it’s cold out,” Pickrell said. “Keep decent tread depth on your tires and make sure they’re inflated to where they’re supposed to be.”

Some other tips Pickrell said that will help your car is to pay attention to your battery, make sure there is no corrosion and if there is slow cranking it may be a dead or bad battery. He also recommends using a lock de-icer to prevent your car door keyhole from freezing over.

“Be more cautious and watch around for other people cause it’s not normally you that causes an issue it’s other people too cause they don’t pay attention. Some people do and some people don’t. Be more cautious and don’t drive when you’re tired,” Pickrell said. “Use your brake pedal firmly and don’t try to stop too quick because it can throw you into a skid.”

Pickrell also recommends to have a roadside emergency kit in the car, these will have jumper cables, blankets, a flashlight, and other helpful items. If you would like to find out more information, you can give Clever Towing and Auto Repair a call at (740) 452-9691.
