ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Many gathered at St. James Episcopal Church Sunday afternoon for a ‘Blue Mass’ to honor those in blue that serve our community.

Law enforcement and first responders from different branches in the area were at the downtown church to be recognized for their service to the community. Rev. Robert Willmann said the tradition of a Blue Mass goes back centuries.

“It’s very ancient in the church and recognizes that these people are called by God, even sometimes to give their own lives,” said Rev. Willmann. “We wanted to do something positive at St. James.”

Those who have lost their lives in the line of duty from the area had their names read and everyone in the congregation was asked to pray for those that put their life on the line every day. First responders on hand included Zanesville Police and Fire Department, troopers with Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Crooksville Fire Department, deputies with the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office, and the Washington Township Fire Department.

“I would like to thank them from the depths of my heart for the sacrifices that they make everyday. Leaving their families, uncertain whether they will come home that night or morning. I would just like to say thank you to them.

Rev. Willmann said they will continue to hold a Blue Mass for as long as he is the reverend at the church.
