Bush Valley Farm offers pasture-raised meat options

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Another local Farmer’s Market vendor is doing their part to promote clean eating in the community.

Bush Valley Farm sells fresh, local pork and lamb products, but it’s not like the meat you’re used to buying in the stores. Though it’s a longer process to get their product on the market, their animals are raised strictly outdoors.

“Here we, again, we have a pasture raised heritage breed of pig. It’s not pork like you’re used to buying in the grocery store that came out of a confinement barn. Our animals are born and raised on pasture, they’re never in a building their whole life until they have that one bad day. In this method it’s a much longer period of time to get them to market size. It’s not like in a confinement barn or a feed lot,” explains Scott Bush, who owns Bush Valley Farm along with his wife.

In addition to their pork and lamb, Bush says they have started raising a heard of cattle and will offer beef next year as well. He says the time it takes to get their product to the market is about twice as long as it is for confinement barn or feed lot raised animals.

Bush boasts that the way they raise animals is not only the way it should be done, but it also provides a healthier option for consumers.

“The health benefits from eating pastured raised meats is a throwback to our grandparents and our great-grandparents. Before World War II, most pigs were raised outside, which is the way mother nature designed them. And it just makes, again, for a healthier animal and for healthier meat for us to be eating,” Bush added.
