City Officials Give Linden Avenue Sinkhole Update

The City and the Genesis Wyoming Railroad are working hand in hand to complete repairs of the sinkhole on Linden Avenue.

We spoke to Chip Saunders, Engineer for the City of Zanesville who told us they had to dig 20 feet down to the location of the hole and reinforce it with 12 foot wide trench boxes. Saunders told us just how the sinkhole appeared on the roadway.

“The sinkhole was caused by a stone arch structure that was actually probably over 100 years old. It went underneath the railroad tracks and continued to go across Linden Avenue.”

The sinkhole appeared on Linden just past Goodman Steel. The area of the hole is within the Genesis Wyoming Railroad right of way, who is responsible for the project. The road was closed on Friday to get the repairs started and make way for the large construction equipment. Mayor Jeff Tilton thanked the city for their patience during the closing of Linden.

“We worked together with the county on this issue plus the railroad and everybody has been very cooperative and we thank the citizens for their patience with us and the only reason we closed the road was for the safety of the citizens.”

Saunders says the road was closed on Friday to get the repairs started and make way for the large construction equipment. Linden was temporarily opened Monday to let traffic through but will be closed again Tuesday for an estimated two days so that repairs can be completed.
