Day 1 at the OHSAA track and field tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 110th OHSAA track and field championships saw a number of area athletes either qualify for Saturday or earn All-Ohio honors.

Few athletes were as busy on day one as Sheridan’s Ethan Tabor. He ran both hurdle events, anchored 4×400, and placed eighth in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet and ten 1/2 inches. Tabor also ran well enough to qualify for Saturday’s finals in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.

Cambridge’s Lily Ritz also earned All-Ohio honors. The Bobcat athlete came in second in the high jump with an effort of five foot and eight inches.

Karlie Zumbro of John Glenn was All-Ohio last year in the hurdles and she’s close to doing it again this year. She won her heat in the 300 meter hurdle with a time of 44.41 seconds to move to the finals Saturday. In the 100 meter hurdles she finished in just 15.07, good enough to send her to the finals in that event, too.

It might of been in the shot put that area athletes shined the most though. Two Muskingum Valley League throwers earned All-Ohio honors. Maysville’s Kyler Hooper finished eighth with a long throw of 51 feet and three 3/4 inches.  Louie Reicher of John Glenn came in fourth with a toss of 55 feet and 4 1/2 inches.

“It’s just incredible. Never being here before and nobody thought I’ve had the opportunity to make it because I haven’t been doing shot put. But I’ve turned it up this year and it’s great to be here,” said Reicher.

WHIZ-TV will follow area athletes Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium as well. You can see results for all area athletes at ohsaa.org
