Drug Court graduates
NEW LEXINGTON, Ohio- Six people from Perry County have successfully completed drug court and are being recognized on April 25th for successfully completing the program.
Judge Dean Wilson said the New Direction Drug Court program helps prevent future criminal activity by connecting drug users with needed treatments, helpful support, and weekly meetings. He said programs like drug court will help solve the current drug epidemic. It’s not as simple as putting people struggling with addiction in jail.
“Incarceration is only warehousing them until the next problem pops up. If we get participants that are actively engaged, and want to be engaged in the process, we’re not only alienating the jail problem but, we’re also making them a whole person again and better for their family,” said Judge Wilson.
Sarah Thorne is one of those who successfully completed the program. She said she ended up in drug court because she stole her sisters wedding ring, so she could pay for meth. She said her sister was convinced by a police officer to press charges which resulted in Thorne being placed into drug court.
“I’m really glad she did because I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the consequences from my actions The New Direction Drug Court has changed my life completely. There’s just so much support and you’re not just a number to them. It’s an individual basis and they really care,” said Thorne
Thorne said she has been drug-free and sober for 14 months and also has a full-time job. She, and five others, will be surrounded by their families and recognized for successfully completing drug court.
