Farmers And Hunters Feeding The Hungry

During the winter months donations at Christ’s Table tend to be lacking. Thanks to the Farmers and Hunters Feeding The Hungry program (F.H.F.H.), this winter hundreds of families will go to bed well fed.

The program began over eighteen years ago in Maryland. Each year, during deer hunting season, hunters are encouraged to donate their kills to a participating meat processor. Those processors will then clean, butcher, package and freeze the meat free of charge and pass it on to a local food bank.

“They don’t have to pay to have the deer processed, if they want to donate they can,” said Robert Daniels, Chapter Coordinator of F.H.F.H. “I have some hunters donate, but I have different groups that donate money too, I get checks every once in a while and I forward it on to the people in Maryland and they take care of all the finances. They make sure when the processors submit their invoice they get paid for doing the deal.”

Each donated deer provides about 200 servings of high protein red meat. This year Christ’s Table received over 2,400 pounds of meat to distribute to fifteen food pantries and four hot meal programs.

“This is a great time of the year for us to get the deer because our shelves are empty and our freezers are empty, and this is the time of year that hot meals are so important to those that we serve,” said Christ’s Table’s Executive Director, Keely Warden.
