ZANESVILLE, Ohio– Several area students are heading back to the class room this week.

Tuesday was the first day of the 2016/2017 school year for Bishop Rosecrans High School. Principal Jennifer Mallett said she’s always excited for the first day of school.

“Over the summer the halls are dead and when the students come back it brings life back into the school,” Principal Mallett said. “It just makes the day so much better.”

All students at Rosecrans high school are divided into houses. These houses are named after the four authors of the gospel. Students are selected for their house their freshman year. We spoke to four directors of the house.

“At the end of our sophomore year, we go through an application process and an interview with multiple teachers, and then we get chosen,” Chloe Amich said. “We keep this role all through our junior year and our senior year. Some of my best friends were in my house. I probably may have not talked to those seniors or juniors when I was a freshman, because they are in my house or mentor group I got to know them a lot better than I would have.”

“You get closer and then there is that competition between each house,” Allison Losco said. “So you’ll always get closer with everybody else.”

“Each house has different attributes,” Joe Goggin said. “Each have a different symbol and a gospel verse that stands for the houses. There is a sense of pride there.”

“Take the first step and run for a position,” Travis Johnson said. “You can’t win, if you don’t run for it.”

Both the students and staff at Rosecrans say they are looking forward to a fun and exciting school year.
