First Ever Family Reading Festival

The first ever Family Reading Festival took place Saturday at the Colony Square Mall, and it was an event that was fun for everybody.
The Muskingum County Literacy Council put Family Reading Festival on. The theme of today was reading is a super power . There were all kinds of fun activities and prizes for kids, a variety of super heroes, and a lot of local businesses and organizations to offer fun things for the kids to do.
Muskingum County Literacy Council, Cindy Lawyer said “It’s crucial. It’s important children know that reading is important and also to let families know some different activities that they can do with their children. We have 43 different tables of groups and organizations represented here today at the Colony Square Mall. They all have fun activities for these children to do.”
They also had guest speakers from the community at the event to read books to the children including Mayor Jeff Tilton, Dana Matz, Chief Bell, Chief Curry, and author Karen Goff Dysen. Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center Curriculum Consultant , Cindy Miller said this is their first time having this event, but there are certainly future plans to make it annual.
“This is our very first one, but we have a plan that we’re gonna have this be an annual event. We’re just looking at the time frame of when would be the most advantageous for everybody. Yes we plan to do this every single year so we are super excited we have such a great turn out today,” said Miller.
Today was a fun opportunity for community kids to come out and learn, while having fun. Miller and Lawyer said reading is super important for everybody to do, and it is a life skill everybody can enjoy.
