Gas Pump Skimmer Sweep Over Labor Day Weekend

County auditors across the state of Ohio will be launching a gas pump skimmer sweep over the labor day weekend.

People have been placing card skimmer devices at the gas pumps that can steal your debit and credit card information.  At least 30 skimming devices have been found at gas pumps in 12 counties in Ohio since last October.

Don Lang, Weights and Measures Inspector for Muskingum County said that there hasn’t been any skimmers found in southeast Ohio yet, but he still has quite a few pumps to check over the weekend.

“If you use your pin number it seems to be worse,” said Lang.  “Because they can capture that too.”

Lang said that the safest option would be to pay with your card inside the gas station or pay with cash.

“You just have to watch your checking account, because they can get your information today and maybe not use it until next month.”

Lang said that after they check the remaining pumps over the weekend, they will release the information on their findings next week.
