Habitat for Humanity Seeking Volunteers

Habitat

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – An area organization is calling for volunteers
to help provide affordable housing for low income individuals in
Muskingum County. Habitat for Humanity is currently constructing a
home on Mead Street in Zanesville; and volunteers will be needed for
the next 12 to 14 weeks. Barry Unger, with Habitat for Humanity, says
construction experience is not a requirement to volunteer.

“We’re there
Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9 AM to 4 PM. We take about six
volunteers a day—and you know, you’re really kind of doing a
variety of different work. Right now, we’re doing things like
putting in insulation. We’re going to start hanging drywall—and
the best thing is, you don’t have to have any experience doing
these things. So if you just come out with a good attitude—ready to
work—our cite coordinator will show you everything you need to do,
get you the tools and get you going.”

Melissa Best, with
Habitat for Humanity, says the goal of the organization is to
revitalize communities and improve living conditions for those in
poverty.

“Our mission is
very much based on eliminating poverty housing. We’re focused right
now on Mead Street. In Zanesville, Mead Street used to be a lovely,
lovely area to live; and it’s had its challenges over the last few
years so we’re really working hard to revitalize that neighborhood.
One in six families in the United States—they spend half or more of
their income on housing; and it shouldn’t cost anywhere near that.
So, we’re really working on a safe, affordable place for people to
live.”

Individuals who are
not comfortable working on a construction site can still help out at
the ReStore. Volunteers should be 16 years or older. For more
information or to volunteer, visit www.volunteer@habitatseo.org.
