High school football previews – John Glenn Little Muskies

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – It was three years ago that Matt Edwards took over for hall of fame coach John Kelley. Edwards now says that he’s ready to win with his guys.
The Little Muskies are coming off a 4-6 season in which they lost three games by a touchdown or less. This year’s team returns a lot of seniors and talent at the skill positions.
“It’s nice to have a senior class like this. Our slogan this year is ‘It’s time.’ We think we’ve taken two steps forward the last two years and this is the year we think we can put it together,” said Edwards.
John Glenn’s roster has 16 seniors and a lot of returning starters. However, one of the new faces will be at the quarterback spot. Senior Justin Heacock was all-MVL in basketball last year, but this will be his first time taking reps as the starting quarterback.
“I like playing quarterback. It’s fun being a leader of the team. I think I’m doing pretty good. Stu (last year’s starter, Matt Stewart) was a good quarterback. I’m just trying to do the best I can.”
Despite the strong offense that returns, Edwards thinks the team’s calling card may be on the other side of the ball.
“[Our defense] is going to be the secret of our year. At any time we can put eight or nine guys on defense that have started for us on Friday nights. They’re young and athletic,” said Edwards.
John Glenn opens the season with two non-conference rivals in Meadowbrook and Cambridge. The Little Muskies lost to both of those teams last year by a total of just seven and four points, respectively.
