Historian McCullough visits Ohio to discuss ‘Pioneers’ book

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Historian David McCullough is headed to Ohio to discuss a new book that focuses heavily on the state.
McCullough is scheduled to discuss “The Pioneers: The Heroic Story of the Settlers Who Brought the American Ideal West” on Monday at the Statehouse.
The book focuses on the first band of pioneers that set out from New England for the Northwest Territory. They settled in what is now Marietta, on the banks of the Ohio River.
The book’s depiction of white settlement has drawn criticism , including from Native Americans, historians and reviewers.
The sponsoring Ohio Library Association said C-SPAN would record the sold-out Monday discussion for airing on BOOK-TV.
Another Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, Doris Kearns Goodwin, will kick off the Capitol Square Foundation’s new three-year Statehouse lecture series on June 25.
