Hunting Safety

The first day of December brought the first day of gun season and many hunters are taking to the woods.

For many, hunting is a rush and a way of enjoying nature, but the safety aspects that go hand in hand are just as important. We spoke to Kathy McAnn, the owner of the Dillon Falls Bait Shop, who gave us some tips to follow when out looking for deer.

"Wearing your orange. Anytime there’s guns, or you’re using guns out in the woods, you wanna make sure you got your orange on that way another hunter can see you…before you pull that trigger, just make absolute sure, you know exactly what you’re shooting at."

Other things you can do when out in the field are practicing proper fence crossing techniques, always treating a gun as if its loaded, keeping the safety on, and only keeping your finger on the trigger when you’re ready to shoot. All hunters are required to take a basic safety course and test before obtaining their license. One hunter Charlie Scheide, feels hunter safety is a must.

"Hunter safety means everything because I mean you gotta be aware of your surroundings especially when handling guns and stuff. You have to pay attention. Hunter safety is very very important."

Overall, hunting can be a very rewarding and exciting experience. If you would like to learn to hunt too, you are encouraged to visit the website: www.wildohio.com to learn more about classes.
