Laura Tompkins Named New Superintendent of Zanesville City Schools

ZANESVILLE, OH – Laura Tompkins, a long-standing member of the Zanesville City Schools community, has been appointed as the new superintendent.

Tompkins, who has been with the district since 1994, brings a lot of experience from her roles as a physical education teacher, elementary school assistant principal, and high school principal. Her leadership in these positions has been marked by her focus on student achievement and creating a supportive educational environment.

“I loved kids. I wanted to be with kids, I love games, and I love being active. I thought physical education was a great way to go. I love coaching, and I think that’s a big part of my role as superintendent. Coaching the teachers and the administration to do great things for our students. I think we have wonderful students and great families in our community. I would like to bridge the gap between the schools and community as whole,” Tompkins said.

As she steps into her new role as superintendent, Tompkins has outlined several key goals for the district. She places a strong emphasis on building positive relationships between the administration and teachers, believing the collaborative efforts are essential for the district’s success.

“Big goals. We’re a little contentious this year. I think building those relationships between the administration and the teachers is going to be a huge thing. We’re here to support them. They’re going to get more planning time and they’re going to get more time together. I think treating them as professionals is a huge thing. I think we have great administrators in our school. Some of them are young in their careers. So, just coaching them up and they’re there for the teachers. It’s a great thing,” Tompkins said.

Tompkins looks forward to being actively present in the school buildings and the community, engaging with students, teachers, and families to build on the district’s successes and address its challenges.
