Laynee Swingle places first internationally at HOSA-Future Health Professionals event

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Health Occupations Students of America, or HOSA (HOE-SAH), held their annual International Leadership Conference, where a local student won big.
Recent Maysville High School graduate, Laynee Swingle, ranked first place internationally in the patient care technician category this year. Swingle competed alongside 15,000 students from all 50 states and several countries outside the U.S. in Indianapolis with the support of her peers to keep her going.
“I’m not one to have much confidence in myself, honestly. It’s a lot of peer help. ‘Laynee, you got this, Laynee, keep pushing,’ like, ‘Laynee, show up.” Honestly, mostly just the teachers that I have, the support team that I had really pushed me to get to the point I was at and to the point where I was like, ‘yeah, I got this under my belt. I got this at this point,'” Swingle said.
This is the second year for HOSA at Maysville and the second year that a student has performed well, with Baily Silver winning fourth in phlebotomy last year. Advisor Chelsie Kim says the program succeeds because of the hard-working students and the community support.
“We just have some of the best kids that are just so motivated and we really have a lot of support from our administration, our board of education; they have really let us kind of full force go with things. And then, we have great business partners too in our business advisory comittee. So, we’ve gotten a lot of donations from Muskingum University, Genesis, MVHC (Muskingum Valley Health Center) and different places so we’re able to have all that hands-on equipment in our classroom,” Kim said.
Swingle will be attending Ohio State University in the fall for physical therapy and encourages any students who are interested in the HOSA program to sign up.
