Snow Emergency Driving Conditions

Winter1

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The snowy, cold, and wet conditions have made the roads slippery and more dangerous to drive on. Many of the local counties reached a level two snow emergency.

A level two snow emergency means that roads are hazardous. Sheriff Matt Lutz said only those who feel it is necessary to drive should do so. He said the limited amount of cars on the road means fewer accidents and snow plow drivers can plow and salt easier.

“When you have these mornings, it’s really tough because of that kind of influences us when we go to a level two. We’re trying to keep the road ways clear for the state trucks, county trucks, township trucks to be able to get out and do their job. If we get somebody out there that doesn’t do very well out there in the weather and becomes stranded or stuck not only is that a jeopardy to them but it’s also creating a lot more havoc,” said Lutz.

Sheriff Lutz said when the roads get icy and driving conditions are poor the most important thing is to give yourself more time to reach your destination.

“It seems like that’s where we get folks that are getting into trouble. They get into a big hurry, they think they can drive in this, they don’t think it’s as slippery as it really is so there for maybe they go too fast. Lose control of their cars, slide off into a ditch, which could cause damage to their car or somebody’s property. They could be stranded there for a couple hours worth of time,” said Lutz.

Sheriff Lutz said you should also leave more space between the car in front of you, in case of a sudden stop or if you skid when trying to stop.
