ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Saturday is National Alpaca Farm Day and one of the area’s largest alpaca farms opened up to visitors.

Alpaca farms are a big deal in Ohio. The Buckeye State has more alpaca farms than any other state in the country. Lindsay Henderson, who is the Marketing Officer for Alpacas of Spring Acres in Muskingum County hopes by opening up to the public it will show how important alpacas are.

“I hope many alpaca farms are celebrating today. We welcome everyone from the community into experience what alpacas have to offer. We are kind of a hidden gem. And I think a lot of people don’t know that we are here. It’s such a beautiful place and we want to share it with everyone. So that’s why we have Alpaca Farm Days,” said Henderson.

Alpacas of Spring Acres has over 80 alpacas on 180 acres of land off of Big B Road in Muskingum County. Visitors got a chance to get up close with the alpacas and see how their wool is made into sweaters and blankets.

“Every alpaca has its own personality,” said Henderson. “Some of them are a little more shy but we have some very friendly ones here. They like getting petting and loved. They are super soft. They are a little different from sheep because they are hypoallergenic. It’s really good for making sweaters.”

Alpacas of the Spring Acres will be open to the public Sunday as well for National Alpaca Farm Day from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. The event is free.
