Local Businesses Prepare for Active Shooter Situations
Alert, lock-down, inform, counter, and evacuate (ALICE) is what you are supposed to do in an active shooter situation. The Muskingum County Safety Council is focusing on that message for this months meeting.
The Safety Council meeting is being held on Wednesday, April 27 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the morning at the Zanesville Country Club. Investigator Bethany Hayes will lead the ALICE training session and help local employers prepare for an active shooter incident. President of the Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce Tom Poorman, said this meeting is to help the local businesses to be prepared.
“Schools have been utilizing this approach for a long time, not so much private sector employers and other government employers,” said Poorman. “So that’s what this programs all about. This is an opportunity for them.”
The ALICE training session will focus on what ALICE is, why and how employers should prepare, and how to respond to violent situations. It will help local employers and workers understand what to look for and how to handle each situation.
“Understand why they need to be prepared you know this stuff is real,” said Poorman. “This stuff unfortunately does happen. We want them to understand what they need to do to learn more as you said and also to take it to the next step. We also want them to walk out of there that day with some knowledge of what to do if something were to happen before they have the opportunity to get further training. ”
