Local Elementary Celebrates ‘Earth Day’ in the Garden
Nearly 500 elementary school students took the classroom outside Wednesday.
In celebration of ‘Earth Day,’ Nashport Elementary School is allowing students the opportunity to work in the school’s outdoor learning center. Co-PTO President, Trisha Shesky, said the school is passionate about giving students the chance to step away from their desks and computers to experience hands-on, interactive learning while connecting with the natural world.
“We just feel like they are cooped up in the classrooms, the teachers don’t have a choice in it and we figured if we gave them something as beautiful as this the school, everyone they could draw the children out, teach them in a different environment and maybe get them moving and get their brains flowing a little more,” said Shesky.
Shesky said it’s important to the school and the community to give the students this opportunity. Because it’s a learning experience they can take with them for the rest of their lives.
“With ‘Earth Day’ rolling around the corner I think it’s very awesome that we are planting we are growing we are trying to teach our young one what is important about the future and how it’s important to take care of the earth,” said Shesky.
The garden will eventually be sectioned off into three learning areas and each area will hold a different educational activity for the students in the future.
