MCLS Challenges Young Readers to Reach 1,000 Books

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Muskingum County Library System is giving its youngest readers a big goal, one book at a time.
MCLS is encouraging kids to turn the page with two reading challenges: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and 1,000 Books Before 3rd Grade. Children up to five years old can take on the kindergarten challenge, reading books of their choice and logging each one along the way.
“They’ll get a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten book. There are little activities and things inside it to keep kids engaged. So, as they’re reading, they can track their progress. Once they read 100 books, then they’ll come in and get a prize. After each 100, they’ll get a prize. Once they officially read 1,000 books, they’ll get a little trophy, they’ll get their picture that we put on our social media page, and they’ll also get a little prize as well for working so hard.” MCLS Youth Service Manager, Katie Merritt said.
And older kids can keep the reading going with 1,000 Books Before Third Grade. For every 100 books they read and log, they’ll earn a special Brag Tag. Readers can track their books on the log from MCLS or through the Beanstack app.
“After every 100 you get a Brag Tag. Once you collect all 10 of them, then you completed the challenge. You’ll also get an award, a certificate, and a picture posted on social media to show you accomplishment. ” Merritt said.
You can register by visiting the John McIntire Library or on the Beanstack app. More information can be found on the MCLS website.
