MUSKINGUM COUNTY, Ohio- The Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center (MVESC) is providing parenting classes designed by family and social scientists.

The online “Parenting Wisely” three hour class will provide helpful tips and tools to parents who may be experiencing difficult situations or just for any parents who may need additional tips.

Krystal McFarland, Director of Preschool Services at Muskingum Valley ESC, talked about what parents can expect during this highly interactive course.

“They also get a workbook that outlines the skills and discusses the scenarios. During the class we watch videos of some of the real life scenarios and then the people on the video model the solutions to those scenarios, and participants can work through their workbook and watch the videos,” McFarland stated. “Then we have a discussion about things that are going on in their lives. I usually share points and tips, and things that I’ve picked up over the years. It’s really meant to be an interactive class so it really depends on the participants. They kind of drive the discussion and where we go.”

The class is for any parenting structure whether that be a single parent, married or co-parenting.

Some parents never had that certain role model or good parenting shown to them while growing up. McFarland said this class is a good opportunity to break generational barriers.

“The goal of the classes are to help prevent child abuse and neglect. We are utilizing a program called “Parenting Wisely” and the program has videos of real scenarios of what you might face as a parent and it also offers some solutions to those scenarios, and how you may work with your child to get through those things more successfully. It has lots of skills built into it. So parents can hopefully add those skills into their tool box to help be a more effective parent,” McFarland said.

The course is free through the support of the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund and will be held throughout February and March.
