New building permit requirements and other updates from South Zanesville

SOUTH ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Village of South Zanesville has announced a series of updates for its residents, starting with building permits.

South Zanesville Fire Department Chief Russell Taylor says that starting Monday, those in the village will need to file for building permits for their projects through the Southeast Ohio Building Department.

“… and we’re doing this to protect our citizens from people coming inside, doing work, and leaving and they can’t get back with them. This way we have a record of everything being inspected and if something goes wrong, we got somebody to keep responsible for that damage,” Taylor said. “Between law enforcement and us, if we’re out riding around, we will stop and ask you, ‘did you get a permit?’ And if you didn’t, we’re going to request you to stop working until you go get the permits that you need for that current job.”

Failure to obtain a permit after their request can result in fines from the village. You can visit the Southeast Ohio Building Department’s website to learn more and file.

The next major update came from the village’s fiscal officer, Taylor Bennett. She explains why you will see the water department and workers around the village.

“We just want to let the village residents know that live in South Zanesville, that here in the next couple of months, we’re going to be working with an organization called ARCAP,” Bennett said. “They have allotted us some money through the EPA, where we are going to be going out and marking different valve locations, shut-offs, different areas that are pertinent to upcoming infrastructure projects that we plan to eventually go for, like grant money to try to just make things better around here.”

This process will not impact normal operations. Bennett also mentioned in her village updates that new pickleball courts in the village park are expected to be ready at the end of August.
