Ohio Flags of Honor Memorial Travels to Zanesville

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio Flags of Honor travels the state each year to honor those who have lost their life in the War on Terrorism. Today it made its yearly stop in Zanesville at Zane’s Landing Park

Flags were placed in the ground with the names of those who have lost their life serving the county written on them as well as the branch they served in. All total 293 flags were planted. Five of them had names of residents from Muskingum County, three from Perry County, and one from Morgan County. Bud Johnson is the chairman for the organization and said this is a small way to keep the memory of those who have paid the ultimate price alive.

“I told the parent the first year we did this that ‘I can’t replace your son. I’m not trying to but I want you to see that there are other people that care about your lose,’” said Johnson.

The tradition began in 2006 and it has made a stop in Muskingum County each year. Former county commissioner Dorothy Montgomery played a big role in getting the memorial to come to Muskingum County. Montgomery said she gets chills every time she hears the names called out and the flags placed in the ground.

“It’s overwhelming,” said Montgomery. “I think this is just the young people representing Ohio, multiple that by 50 state and how many flags there would be. It’s a goose-pimpling experience to see how many there are and just look out there on that sea of red, white, and blue.”

The flags will be on display through Sunday when they will move on to be displayed in Grove City, Ohio.
