Olaf & Olga Hanson Scholarship Recipients Named
ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The lives of two area teachers are being
memorialized as the Olaf and Olga Hanson Scholarship was awarded to
two college juniors at the Muskingum County Community Foundation this
afternoon. Olaf and Olga Hanson were sisters who maintained a strong
passion for education and the desire to pay it forward by helping
aspiring educators. Vicki Whitacre, Fund Representative, says both
women would be proud to see their legacies live on through future
teachers.
“They both were
retired school teachers here in this area; although they had taught
in other areas before retiring here. I don’t believe Olga ever
taught here—she was not able—but her sister taught in the
Tri-Valley School District; Olaf did. I think she’d be very honored
and very proud; and delighted to see all of these young people who
have received it for the last ten years or so.”
The scholarship
recipients were each presented with a $500 check to put toward their
college educations. Recipients included Maya Norris, a junior at
Cedarville University, and Cammie Bunting, a junior at Muskingum
University. Norris says she is grateful to have been selected for the
scholarship.
“I’m just very
grateful for this opportunity and I think the scholarship is a good
reminder of the lives that teachers can touch and that I hope to be
able to just touch in the future like Miss Olga did and Miss Olaf.”
Scholarship
recipients were also invited to select a pin from Olaf’s vest to
keep in memory of her life and legacy.
