OSU Extension Luncheon
During a luncheon today, the Ohio State Extension Office gave a progress report to the Muskingum County Commissioners.
Extension Educator, Mark Mechling, said the meeting provides extension officials with a platform to update the commissioners on the past year’s work. Some of the items discussed included programs the office deals with in agriculture and other service projects. Mechling highlighted some of their upcoming plans.
“We’re doing some soil testing with looking at organic matter percentages, we’re getting prepared for a new fertilizer certification program which we’re kicking off this winter, and we prepared for that last fall,” Mechling said.
With the commissioners being one of the main sources of funding for the extension office, Mechling said it’s important to keep them in the loop with how the county’s money is being put to use.
“The reason why we talk with the county commissioners is they’re one of our primary funders of the extension office, so it’s important to communicate with them and explain to them where their dollars are being spent here in the extension office,” Mechling said.
As part of it’s goal of getting kids ready to succeed, the office also offers a CARTEENS program for teens who have received traffic violations. Last year, nearly 240 kids participated in the two hour class which provides teens with mentors from 4-H and also from local law enforcement.
