ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Police say good Samaritans in Zanesville were able to help a woman out of her car after she crashed into the Muskingum River.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. on Sunday near the corner of Linden Avenue and Lee Street.

Zanesville police say a 26-year-old woman was driving her car down Lee Street when she may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Bystanders helped the woman out of her car and told officers the woman may have been going about 60-miles-per hour, according to police.

Officers say 9-1-1 was called by the Ford Fusion’s On Star software after the crash.

Dispatch told police they were able to hear those good samaritans banging on the car’s windows — trying to wake up the woman and try to help her out of her vehicle.

Sergeant Alan Etters says the woman appeared to be uninjured and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

“We got a phone call, about 14:53 — said a vehicle was in the river. By the time officers arrived there was bystanders helping the female out of the car. It appears that she may have possibly fallen asleep — can’t confirm that — but due to lack of skid marks. She didn’t appear to be intoxicated or under impairment of anything at the time. She was transported to the hospital just to make sure that she was okay. But no major injuries that anybody could tell.”

Police, fire and AEP Ohio worked together to clean up debris and also fix an anchor wire after the car went through the intersection, over the embankment and then into the river.
