The Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra put the finishing touches on this year’s children’s concert Saturday morning.

The orchestra’s conductor Dr. Laura Schumann said that many orchestras have shows tailored to children and so when she came aboard as conductor many years ago, it felt right to add one to their orchestra as well.

“Everybody should have music. Music is one of the arts. People say part of heart is art and that’s a great place to think. It’s a great place to know. Music is wonderful. Kids can have self expression. It’s a creative outlet. It helps if you’re feeling down. You can just listen to some great music. It helps with creativity and learning,” said SEO Symphony Orchestra Conductor Dr. Laura Schumann.

In the past the children’s concerts have involved horses and superheroes. This year they’re focusing on adding art to the show. Some area art teachers will show kids how to draw as they listen to the music.

“I love to make music fun for kids for grownups. I’m just a big kid anyway. So we’re going to have some music from the greatest showman So it’s very familiar to kids as well. Superman, Batman and because everyone loves superheroes we have some music from the Lion King as well. Wizard of Oz, just some great stuff that is familiar for kids and they are going to get to draw to it,” said Dr. Schumann.

The Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra’s concert will take place at the Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center in Cambridge Sunday at 3:30pm. Those interested can purchase tickets at the Orchestra’s website or can also be purchased at the Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center. Children are free with a paid adult.
