Sheridan’s Booth Steps Down
Sheridan boys basketball coach Greg Booth has resigned from his post following five winning seasons in Thornville.
"I have a lot of other things that I need to devote some time to," he said Saturday, adding that he will begin taking graduate school classes this summer.
Booth turned in an 80-34 record during his tenure that includes an MVL title in the 2010-2011 season. The Generals finished 16-8 this past season.
He said the community has respected his wish to pursue new endeavors.
"I’ve received a lot of support (since making the decision) and I’ve had a lot of support (before the decision was made.)
"There are so many good kids (at Sheridan) that I would just love to keep coaching. There’s never going to be a group where you’re like, ‘Well, I don’t want to coach anymore,’ because I absolutely do."
Booth will continue to serve as an English teacher at Sheridan High School. He stated that he plans to return to the sidelines in some capacity in the future.
When asked about the legacy he left on the program, Booth insisted that the Generals’ recent success should be credited to his players more so than himself.
"We’ve continued to do what we’ve always done and we did it pretty well, but that says a whole lot more about the kids than it does me," he said. "I’ve enjoyed as a head coach a pretty substantial amount of talent here and there’s a lot left so it’s not as if I reinvented anything."
As for what the future holds, Booth hopes that whoever is tabbed to replace him can enjoy even more success.
"We’ve had a pretty good run and I feel like Sheridan basketball has been near the top of the league for a while, and maybe somebody can come in and help us take the next step," Booth said.
Sheridan’s search for a new coach is ongoing.
