Sixth Annual Math Morning Quiz Contest
Seven local high schools came together today to compete in a math quiz contest.
The 6th Annual Math Morning event was held at Ohio University Zanesville campus in Elson Hall Auditorium Friday. The room was packed with students and faculty from each school for support and to cheer on the individual teams. The focus in each of the two contests was on foundations and no calculator will be required or allowed. Philo High School Math Teacher, Jenny Swingle said this is something the students have been preparing for all year.
“I think it’s important that they come to a college setting and experience academic competition. I ‘m proud of the education that Philo High School has an I think this showcases the talent that we have and the talent that we have in our school district,” said Swingle.
Trey Lutz competed in the Algebra 2 quiz contest for the first time in a team of two. Lutz said this event was exciting for him because math is his favorite subject and it felt good to compete against other schools.
“This is really cool I ‘ve never done this. I’m a freshman so this is pretty cool. Just to compete against other schools. I studied example questions that they gave us and we have been preparing all year,” said Lutz.
Lutz and his partner came in second place in the algebra 2 section of the competition.
The following schools participated:
- Bishop Rosecrans
- John Glenn
- Maysville (won first place in Algebra and Pre-Calculus contests)
- Newark
- Philo (first runners-up in algebra contest)
- Tri-Valley (first runners-up in Pre-calculus contest)
- Zanesville
Each participant was given a certificate of participation, while the first-place teams each received a $200 cash prize. The first runners up teams each received $100. The event sponsored by Ohio university Zanesville was partially supported by Merrill Lynch and Bank of America.
