Smoke Free Campuses
Zane State College and Ohio University-Zanesville are proud to become smoke free campuses.
Effective since January first of this year, both Zane State College and Ohio University-Zanesville are now smoke free campuses. This morning we spoke with the director of public safety at OUZ, Bethany Hayes, about the reasoning behind this movement.
“Awareness has been a big initiative that we’ve take on along with this, we wanted to educate our campus on the using of tobacco products and the benefits of not using. Along with steps that they could take to help us make and achieve this successful transition. So, a big component of this has been educating the campus of the benefits of not using tobacco products.”
This covers all types of tobacco, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and even smokeless products. Hayes says they’re aware that changing to a completely smoke free campus can be difficult for many, so they have measures in place on how to make a successful transition.
“As institutions of higher learning, it is important to us to help our students to succeed and to have better lives and part of, not only is providing an educational foundation, but helping them make responsible, healthy choices in their lives.”
Hayes says that not only are schools and campuses making the smoke free transition, but it’s also becoming a common trend in business environments as well.
