Snow Day Decisions
With the freezing temperatures and snowfall schools have had to make the tough decision to close on multiple occasions this year. But, what really goes into the process of canceling classes? We spoke with Maysville Schools Superintendent Monte Bainter to find out.
Bainter says when it comes to calling a snow day the decision is not an exact science. The first step is reliant on technology as the Superintendents will begin by looking at multiple weather forecasts. The next step is much more active.
“We look at the forecast, what is the forecast saying, what is the timing, and what we do here and all the superintendents do we get in our vehicles and we’re out driving the roads.”
As Bainter is driving the roads to gauge the conditions he is in constant communication with all the Superintendents in the county to gain a better perspective of the conditions all around the area. As for the allegations, that the schools have not canceled due to state testing, Bainter had this to say.
“It’s been brought to my attention, did you have school because of the tests, absolutely not. That factors zero into the decision whether or not we have school or don’t have school.”
Bainter stated that his main goal is to keep all of the students safe and says that he would rather make up the days off during spring break than endanger any students or faculty.
