Students Support Cystic Fibrosis Research

Students at Foxfire Schools are doing their part to find a cure for cystic fibrosis.

High school seniors and intermediate school students joined their faculty members on a walk at Zane Landing Park.  Social worker Heather Woodard said the fundraiser usually benefits diabetes research, but this year the school chose to take a different path.

"I think it’s important to show our kids how to be involved in the community, because they can affect our community in a positive way," said Woodard.

Woodard said the schools don’t set a fundraising goal, because 100% of the donations support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  She said the cause hits close to home.

"It’s really near and dear to my heart, because my son, Tyson, has cystic fibrosis," said Woodard.  "He was diagnosed when he was three months old.  He’s now nine years old.  We do consistent medications and therapy every day for Tyson, so to find a cure would be fantastic."

To highlight the growing need for awareness about cystic fibrosis, the foundation recognizes the month of May as National Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.
