ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Animal Shelter receives a unique visit.

Thursday 24 fourth grade students from Larry Miller Intermediate Elementary School stopped by the Animal Shelter Society on Newark Road. Matthew Vascura wrote a proposal with the aid of his teacher to fund this field trip to the shelter.

“I kind of thought it would be fun to come to the animal shelter and learn how to treat a dog properly,” said Vascura. “And I just thought we can come interact with the animals and help out the community. So then I started typing a proposal with my teacher staying after school. And we got it all of it typed up and included learning standards from state.”

Students were shown what goes into caring for all the animals at the shelter. Students also spoke with veterans and staff members and got to learn first hand how crucial nonprofits like the shelter are to the community. Vascura has a special message for his fellow classmates.

“In the summer when you’re off come here and help out. Walk dogs. Interact with the animals. Maybe put money towards the animals. And they can put money for the animals to get them adopted faster. Or maybe adopted some,” said Vascura.

Vascura said he hopes his school continues to bring students to the shelter.
