Tom's Ice Cream Bowl Prepares For Summer Rush

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – It has been a Zanesville tradition since 1948, and as the weather warms up, the lines get longer at Tom’s Ice Cream Bowl. Friday, lines of ice cream fans and school children celebrating the last day of school, stretched outside the building’s doors.

With summer temperatures comes new seasonal flavors to the 68-year-old business, including “Coffee,” “Pineapple Sherbet,” and “Salty Carmel.” Joe Baker has worked at Tom’s since the late 1970s said when you think of traditions in Zanesville, you think of Tom’s.

“Zanesville was known for Conn’s Chip, but Conn’s is actually made in Columbus. Y-Bridge, Adornettos, and Tom’s Ice Cream Bowl is what we generally hear when people come home,” said Baker.

In Baker’s 39 years at Tom’s he said he has made more than 604,000 gallons of ice cream for customers. While few in the state know more about ice cream than Baker, he has a hard time picking which flavor is his favorite.

“I make all the ice cream. It’s all made to my taste. So I have no favorite," said Baker. "I’ve got about eight that I would take any day of the week. I have a three-gallon of Berry Chocolate Bonanza in my freezer at home right now. But that’s not the only flavor I’ve taken home. It’s like asking Paul McCartney what’s his favorite song.”

Tom’s is open seven days a week and for more information you can visit their website at www.tomsicecreambowl.com.
