United Way figures out finances ahead of new year

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The United Way is helping others learn how to make better use of their finances in 2020.

Executive Director of the organization Meg Deedrick says along with losing weight or becoming more fit, saving money is one of the top New Year’s resolutions.

“One of the top New Year’s Resolutions, and it is time for that, is doing better with money — making better money decisions. And so we want to offer a wide range of education — a wide range of information so that regardless of where you are, regardless of the resources that you have, you can make the most of whatever money you got.”

Deedrick says the first step to saving money is to know how much money you’re making and where it’s going.

“We can all do better with what we got and the easiest way to give yourself a raise is to make the most of what you already have. So what I would recommend as the very first step is to just write down where your money is going. It doesn’t require any change whatsoever but awareness is the first key. And so that would be my advice. Whether you’re making $100 a month or $1000 a month. Know where your money is going.”

Once you write those numbers down, she says you can find out whether you need to make more money or spend less to save money.
