ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The need for food and utility assistance has risen locally, according to this month’s report from the United Way of Muskingum, Perry, and Morgan Counties. Over the past month, 211 received 75 calls regarding utility assistance and 312 calls regarding food assistance. Becky Clawson, Community Impact Director, says the data for the monthly report is sourced through the United Way 211 Help Line.

“Every month—just
about—throughout the year, food is the top call; and there are a
couple of reasons for that. Of course food insecurity is an issue
here in our counties—but the other reason for that is the only way
that folks can get in touch with the food pantry or get signed up for
one is through our 2-1-1 information line.”

While need has no
specific season, there are certain times of the year during which 211
receives a higher volume of calls.

“So, we see more
calls when folks are looking for programs—so Christmas help
programs, heating programs in the Winter. And then, in the Summer we
see an influx when kids are out of school looking for food. Or also,
again utilities for those hot months we sort of an influx there.”

This month’s 211
report also shows that crisis calls are up over the previous month –
with three general depression calls, one call regarding a prank, and
one call concerning abuse and violence. 211 can be reached by dialing
211 or 1-800-544-1601.
