ZANESVILLE, Ohio- With colder temperatures comes issues, like keeping your family and pets warm, warming up your car. Defrosting your wind shield, and shoveling snow.

But there is another concern that sometimes tends to go unnoticed until it’s too late. Frozen pipes. We talked to Pat Durant owner of Mr. Rooter and he told us what precautions to take to take in order to avoid water damage from frozen pipes.

“The first thing we should think about is the outside hose, keeping it from freezing. We need to remove it from the faucet. So that faucet can drain so it won’t freeze. Some ways to prevent from freezing is leave a faucet barely tickle. Just to keep the water moving in the pipe. So it doesn’t have a chance to freeze. You can open the cabinet doors on the kitchen sink. To let air from the room to get in underneath the cabin,” said Durant.

Durant said there are some tell tale signs that pipes display when they are already frozen,

“The first sign is you’re going to lose water. Your water is not going to come out of the faucet. At that point you might want to turn the water off. So that if it does continue to freeze it’s not going to bust,” said Durant.

Although pipes may seem like an insignificant issue it may lead to major damage. Contact a professional if you are experiencing any plumbing issues.
