ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Monday was the first day of school for students and teachers in the West Muskingum School District.

We stopped by West Muskingum High School and spoke to principal Ray Peyton, who said the first day of school is going very smoothly. Peyton said he’s excited for the new scholastic programs that are being introduced this year.

“A math course that is paired with a hands on lab component,” Peyton said. “We’re piloting a new course in sports medicine this year. We have a course in interior design that partnered with an art course so it will have that interdisciplinary flavor to it.”

Peyton said they are also piloting an independent study program where students self selection and self director their own learning on a topic of their choice. In addition to that West M high school will partner with Battelle for Kids. Peyton tells us why school started a little later this year.

“With construction with the new elementary, it’s kind of an construction site. Traffic pattern is a little different this year. I encourage everybody to drive a little slower, take your time. Be careful,” Peyton said.

Peyton said because of the late start to this school year, school will be ending a little later but not by much.
