Winter Preparedness
The warmer air has come and gone, and with the recent cool down, many people will be needing to prepare for winter.
Leann Cline, Public Health and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the Health Department told us that winter preparedness is a topic that many don’t keep in mind during the change of season. Cline shared some tips in order to raise awareness on preparing your home for the recent freeze,
"In order to prepare yourself for the winter weather, we recommend that you listen to your weather forecast. Check emergency supplies around your house to make sure that you have adequate water food, and batteries….waterproof your home, as well as bring your pets indoors. Make sure that they have plenty of water and food."
Readying yourself for winter doesn’t stop at your front door. Cline told us it is also incredibly vital to make sure your car is ready for any snowfall or ice events.
"For your car we recommend that you go to your local dealership and get your car inspected. Avoid dangerous travels if there is weather that’s predicted to be bad. Stay off the roads. Make sure you’re aware of what level we’re currently in if there is snow. Have maintenance service on your vehicle and check your antifreeze levels to make sure those are adequate. Keep your gas near full or at least halfway filled so that it prevents fuel line leaks."
You are also encouraged to keep blankets and bottled water in your car. Make sure to listen to the weather watches and warnings issued before you drive or leave your home. To learn more and find winter preparedness checklists, you can visit the health departments website at: www.zmchd.org
